Great Garden Formula Student Garden – Philippa Baldwin

This is a design that Philippa Baldwin, one of our Great Garden Formula Course students has created for a client in Cumbria, UK.

One of the first things I teach students in any of our design courses is how to arrange the space so the layout of the garden both looks good and is functional. As you can see, Philippa has done a great job creating interest and functionality.

Here’s what she had to say about her design…

“The garden was situated in a new build estate so soil conditions not great, it had just been turfed right up to the fence.  The garden is overlooked and lacked any shape or interest.

A good-sized lawn was required for sports and large patio for entertaining.  A pergola was suggested in the design but after much deliberation, the client decided to go for a functional but less permanent gazebo to provide the privacy.”

“In the New Year, the client is hoping to go for horizontal cedar fencing around the full boundary fence, to complete the design.”

Planting

Get the planting right is vital to any great design and Philippa has done a lovely job with the colours and varieties in her design. It’s already looking great in its first year.

And I love the simple finishing touches of the timber and gravel areas as well as the visual punctuation the clipped box globes give to the design.
