Jasprit Bumrah And Other Bowlers Whose Five-For Was A Lost Cause
Jasprit Bumrah recorded a five-wicket haul but it was not good enough to avert a defeat for Mumbai Indians
Jasprit Bumrah’s scintillating five-wicket haul was not enough to avert a defeat for Mumbai Indians, as they fell 52 runs short of the target against Kolkata Knight Riders, on Monday. Chasing a below-par target of 166, Mumbai Indians were skittled out for 117. Barring Ishan Kishan, none of the batters managed anything substantial.
Bumrah’s 5 for 10 were also the best figures by a bowler in the Indian Premier League 2022. Rarely a bowler takes five wickets in the T20s and still end up on the losing side.
Let’s take a look at five other instances where five-for was not enough to avoid a defeat in the IPL.
Umran Malik – 5/25 vs Gujarat Titans (IPL 2022)
Earlier in the IPL 2022, Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Umran Malik claimed five wickets against Gujarat Titans, but he was let down by the other bowlers. In a match that went down to the wire, Gujarat chased down a target of 196 on the last ball of the match. Malik’s spell in the game also won him the Player of the Match award.
Sunil Narine – 5/19 vs Punjab Kings (IPL 2012)
In the IPL 2012, Sunil Narine ran through Punjab Kings to restrict them to 134/9. Narine struck twice in his first two overs, getting rid of the Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh. Brought back into the attack in the 18th over, Narine had Bipul Sharma caught behind and bowled out Praveen Kumar on successive deliveries. He completed his five-for with the wicket of Harmeet Singh in the final over. Kolkata, however, fell two runs short of the target.
Ankit Rajpoot – 5/14 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2018)
Punjab Kings’ Ankit Rajpoot took five wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018. He took three wickets in his first three overs before striking twice in the last over. Rajpoot’s 5 for 14 was the best figures by a bowler in that season, but his team still ended up on the losing side. Punjab were bowled out for 119 while chasing 133.
Munaf Patel – 5/21 vs Punjab Kings (IPL 2011)
Munaf Patel was the first bowler to take five wickets in the losing cause in the IPL. Patel got his five-for on the last ball of his spell, when Ryan Harris holed out to Kieron Pollard. Despite Patel’s stunning spell, Punjab Kings managed to reach a fighting total of 163/8. In reply, Mumbai were bowled out for 87 to suffer a massive 76-run defeat.
James Faulkner – 5/16 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2013)
James Faulkner became the first bowler to register two five-wicket hauls in a season against the same opponent. While his first five-for ensured an easy victory for Mumbai Indians over Sunrisers Hyderabad, the second ended up in a losing cause. The Sunrisers posted a target of 137 and restricted Mumbai to 113/9.
